Impact Tip - Farm Shares

A farm share is when you invest in a local, typically family owned farm and pay in advance for produce and meat/poultry. Basically you have your local AND organic produce and meat delivered to you or a local stop weekly. This is typically less expensive than the grocery stores and supports locally owned farms. This means you have less food miles and you are supporting the local economy. The food is fresher and has made less impact on the environment.

This is SUCH a good idea if it works for you. My friend in Portland has done this for awhile and is very happy. I also have other friends who have tried this and been happy. One suggestion is to share it with a friend because you may end up with more than you need.

Here are a few places to start with in the Chicago area, if you are somewhere else just do a search for Farm Shares in your area or ask at the local farmers market.

I did a farm share with Vicki at Genesis growers, and she is so, so awesome!!! Angelic is also amazing because they have EVERYTHING - dairy meat, veggies . . . farm shares is such a responsible way to support the organic farm movement by supporting your local farmers. A lot of people think that just shopping at whole foods is good enough, but they are shipping peppers from chile, and strawberries from mexico - all of that is using up tons of unnecessary energy. Buying from local farmers is the most green way to support the organic movement, and it is consistent. Thanks for posting this Tina - it is so important for people to know how they can support their local farmers!

That's a great tip - and since you might be paying 2x the price for food by fall - now's a great time to get in as it might save you some cash as well!

Question for you. My friend lives in Addison Il. I was looking for something that maybe delivers and you pay weekly? Is there anything like that?
