Red Rocks 2010

As some of you know, I love rock climbing and I try to go to Red Rocks, NV every year in the spring to kick off climbing season. This year was an amazing trip yet different than the rest. First off, I had Ayla with so taking pictures and climbing came in second to chasing her but luckily I had great friends to help...namely Liesl who is also a mom and photographer friend and her uncle August. We are so grateful for all of our friends who came and climbed and made it such a great trip! So onto the pics!

This one hits me on several levels...art and teaching. Of course Art class was always one of my favs and my sister and brother are teachers and they are always short on funds so I sympathize with this need.

I had such a blast getting to know Candace and Erik and their wonderful families! Candi and Erik are devoted Sox fans, so there could be no better place to celebrate their union than their home, US Cellular field. They had such a party, great food, yummy cupcakes and delicious ice-cream sundaes, and of course being in a ball park, hot dogs to top it off! Candace and Erik are now in Hawaii enjoying the sun, soak it up guys, it keeps snowing here.

Last weekend we were in KY again and Ayla got to go to her first birthday party, it was a blast. The next day I did Cooper's 1 year photos only it was so cold I only had 15 minutes of total shooting time! So more when it gets warm but for now, here are some shots of our little bud Cooper.

Last summer I had the great privilege to photography Jen's wedding and get to know her. She is absolutely awesome, laid back and seriously talented. She is a singer and sings for Deja Vu which also does weddings. They played at her wedding and they were really fun and high energy which kept the dance floor packed all night. I recently did some head shots for her and braved the cold for some urban Chicago shots. Looking forward to seeing her perform again!

Haiti Mentor Marathon

To all you photographers out there or just aspiring photographers, there is going to be a mentor marathon on Wednesday where you can possibly get your images critiqued or just listen in and ask questions as some of the most notable photographers in the wedding business critique other photographers. Every now and then I like to spotlight a vendor that I have met that has great style and a desire to make an impact through their business. These are the kind of people I get excited to share with my clients and anyone out there looking for great people to work with on their wedding day.

I recently had the pleasure to meet Amanda and Tony of Spilled Ink Press and photograph several of their amazing designs. They are trained designers and architects which is evident in their great style. They love to get to know their clients so that each invitation is a original piece that reflects their clients style and personality. Shannon and Paul were such troopers! They insisted on going out for photos last Saturday for lots of fun portraits despite the frigid temps! I have a very specific memory as a middle-schooler of my mom telling me the importance of goals...followed by me rolling my eyes in typical teenage fashion thinking that somehow at 13 I knew more than her! Well despite my need to do it my own way, I filed that information in the back of my brain and put it into practice a short while later and she was right, setting goals is such a great way to stay on track or make changes to your life or routine.

So every year I sit down and think of all my goals in life, health, business, whatever category I can think of and when then I get to work. Sadly my goal list was the least checked off it's ever been for 2009 but I have an excuse...I had a baby! And clearly no idea just how much work it is to be a mom. So this year I will make my list, cut it in half and then maybe it will be a little more realistic :)

So I encourage all my readers to start the new year by making just 12 changes (that's only 1 a month!) to help the planet, your community or even just yourself to be a healthy, happy place/you!

Here are 12 ideas to start you off:
1. Terrapass (probably the easiest way to make an impact) and carbon offset your life!

2. Green City Market: Still open at the Peggy Notebart Museum all winter, help local farmers!

3. Volunteer: Your local Nature Conservancy Chapter is always looking for volunteers and of course hundreds of volunteer opportunities around.

4. Plan an eco-friendly party to show others that you care. Don't we all have at least one party to throw this year (bday, baby shower, bridal shower)? There are tons of tips just on this blog.

5. Start keeping reusable bags in the trunk or carry with you so you don't have to use the plastic ones from the store.

6. Of course we can all stand to drive less so take public transportation at least 10% more than you do now and see how it makes a difference or just carpool!

7. Start a compost (I know this is hard if you live in the city and you already have litter boxes stinking up your apartment! haha but if you can, do!)

8. Dispose of all your electronics and batteries properly and recycle them including your ink cartridges. I always see that car in the burbs driving around that does this for you so take advantage. These people will pay you for them!

9. Aaron's contribution: shorter showers!

10. Turn your thermostat down (I know I hate this one, I like to be warm and cozy in a t-shirt but that's no good!)

11. Avoid farm-raised salmon and eat less meat (also hard but good).

12. Saving the best for last, take a class with I Want to Walk the Talk and support a local non-profit designed to get you active in your community.

I was so excited to welcome the New Year in with Shaina and Grant and their families! I told the grooms mom, it was like, the party you'd always dreamed of going to, and very, " When Harry met Sally " style! (remember all those parties in that movie) This party was dressed to the nines, Grant's mom, Mrs. Law, designed the decor and had a crew of friends and family to make this party over the top fun. Shaina and Grant were as sweet as ever, they were excited to be with each other and excited to join their friends on the dance floor, just like it should be. Also if anyone would like to purchase the decor, for their bash, it's available just let us know.

I found these on etsy while looking for stockings for us for Christmas. Of course I wanted something eco-friendly and cute and found the perfect thing! I can't wait to get mine in the mail. Hanging out with Kristen & Bill was so fun on Sunday, until I told them to go in that awesome waist high field that ended up getting burrs all over Kristen's clothes. Hilarious, well sort of...ya it was, it is a story to tell.

I loved hearing in full detail about how Bill & Kristen got engaged, and loved hearing what they like to do together. I absolutely, love how cuddly and happy they are with one another. I am really looking forward to their wedding in September!

I so enjoyed spending a bit of my Saturday with Kelly and Rob this last weekend. First of all, I love how calm and cool they are, I love how personal they are too. I love that I have no idea how they got engaged either. I ask all my couples that, because I want to be there, I want to get to know their story, I want to get to know who they are together. When I asked Saturday for them to remind me, I heard that actually I hadn't forgotten as I thought I might have, I heard that actually no one knew, that they decided to keep that moment between them. I think that that is so neat. What a rare and perfect moment to just keep intimately safe between each other, you know. Today, I admit, I snuck a glimpse at Oprah and she was interviewing Ted Kennedy's wife, Vickie, and Oprah just plainly asked, "What were his last words to you before he died?" Vickie, thought about it, and said, " You know, I think I'm just gonna keep that to myself." I was proud of her, and I am proud of them. The reason I always ask my couples that question is to really get deep and to begin to understand them as the couple they are, so that I can portray them as they are, in a true way, and what I found was truly amazing to me. I found a love and admiration so big between the two of them, that that, was enough... I found within them a moment so intimate that no amount of retelling would ever do it justice. It's awesome to sit and imagine their sacred moment. I think that bit of curiosity will inspire me for their day!

Climbing in Kentucky

We couldn't have asked for better weather for a much needed break to KY for climbing with our very best friends! Ayla's second climbing trip and she got to meet her friend Cooper, the son of our great climbing friends Mandy and Frank...they are going to be great climbing buds :)

Impact Tip - Thanksgiving eco tips

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I don't know where this year has gone...again! :) Here are some pretty good tips actually for making your thanksgiving experience a little more eco-friendly from MercuryNews.com

1. Break out the fancy fabric napkins this year. Or, if you're using disposable napkins, try ones made from recycled materials.

2. Serve at least one local food. Root vegetables and squash are in season, so make your mashed potatoes, your sweet potato casserole or your pumpkin pie from a local source.

3. Starting today, save plastic containers and lids from products like sour cream to send home leftovers with your guests.

4. If you're going to someone else's house and you know you'll be sent home with leftovers, take your own reusable containers so your host doesn't have to use plastic bags or other disposable items.

5. Delete one item from your menu. There's always too much food anyway, right?

6. Carpool to dinner with someone close by.

7. If you're hosting dinner, turn your thermostat down 2 degrees. The heat from the kitchen and your guests will help warm your home.

8. Serve organic or locally made wine or beer.

9. Compost your food scraps.

10. Don't buy any new decorations. No one will notice. Really, they won't. (this one is for my mom! haha)

Most importantly, travel safe and enjoy your time together!

I adored this couple, I loved their sweetness to each other and their thoughtfulness in planning a wedding that reflected them, their style and the fun they have as a couple. I knew this wedding would be hilariously fun after I did their e-session back in smoking hot July when the three of us sweat it out on Chicago's Navy Pier and they were being all silly. However shooting the wedding increased my knowledge of their story, as individuals, as a couple, and so therefore my images got the whole spectrum of emotion, I noticed they got deeper and sweeter and more real like the moment below when Sherri wiped her tear, and yet continued to show their elation for the day's arrival, and their all out silliness. What a fun day! I loved this bridal party too, they rocked and were awesome even though it was a tad bit chilly outside.

Nicole and Bobby

Nicole and Bobby were married last Sat at the beautiful Ivy Room. I am so glad that they stayed true with their vision for the wedding and kept it outside in the courtyard. It was gorgeous and although the temp was a little colder than they would have preferred, I honestly don't think it even mattered. I know I didn't even notice because I was so excited to see it all go so great...now the bridesmaid's might have a different story to tell! haha In any case, I only saw smiles and tears and have no doubts it all went perfectly!

Emily and Andrew had the most beautiful day, and they worked hard for it too. Not only did they plan a classy wedding but they didn't wash their cars, they bought umbrellas and prayed to their grandma. That said, they had an amazing day, and the sun came out, in perfect time.

Impact Tip - Ecofont

I got this great tip from an Impact Tip follower Christina Brosnan about a new font that uses 20% less ink called ecofont. In the photo below, you can see how they used circles missing from the letters to save on ink. In a smaller font size, it would be significantly less noticeable.

The church was right on the lake and provided a beautiful background as Margaret makes her entrance into the church And a great place for some risky portraits on the rocks :) I am glad they were up for it! So many fun things to photograph and make some unique pictures The final treat was the Irish dance Margaret did with her sister and friend, it was truly amazing to see her dance like that especially in her dress. Her feet are moving so fast they are almost invisible!

I am making this two impact tip's in one since I missed the last one! As you know, we are continually striving to find new products, helpful hints, and great ideas for living and planning green. This doesn't stop with you. We also are always looking for ways to lessen the impact of our business on the environment!

Two new things we have done recently is restructure our back up system for stored photos and files and get new eco-friendly CD and DVD cases for CD/DVD products.

We are now using hard drives to double back up all data to reduce the use of DVD's which will save us all that plastic and storage space to save them. The drives we found are 40% more energy efficient. Here is what Fantom had to say about them...

"Fantom Drive's GreenDrive yields an average drive power savings of 4-5 watts over competitors' drives while maintaining solid performance. That power savings equates to reducing CO2 emission by up to 60 kilograms per drive per year – the equivalent of taking your car off the road for 14 days each year, and saving up to $14 per year in electricity costs depending on the power-on-hours."

So if you need a hard drive for work or home, look into Fantom!

Last week I got to go to my first annual girls weekend getaway for mom's and expectant mom's at my grandma's in Kentucky. What a treat! Impact Tip -7 things you can't recycle

Some of you may have noticed the missing Impact Tip last week, I do apologize. I was in Tahoe with no internet, but I am also realizing how challenging it is to have a brand new baby during the peak season so I am going to limit myself to a new impact tip every other week through the fall in order to balance being a new mom, an educator, and photographer! Thank you for your understanding!

For this week, my mom sent me an interesting article that reminded me that sometimes we think recycling is as easy as plastic, glass, and paper, but there are a lot of things that can't be recycled and tossing them into the bins can actually slow down processing at recycling plants or even cause harm to the employees so I want to share those with you.

Seven things you can't recycle:
1. Plastic bags: these can serious slow downs because they have to be removed one by one. However, many grocery stores will not recycle these for you so save them for your trips to the store and keep them out of the recycle bin.

2. Plastic bottle caps: These are a serious hazard to plant employees as the caps trap air in the bottles and they can explode. Be sure to take the caps off before you recycle but don't worry, the little plastic rings are fine.

3. Frozen food boxes: These boxes contain a plastic layer in them which prevents them from being recycled.

4. Soy milk cartons: These containers contain a layer of foil and plastic which is hard to separate and can't be recycled.

5. Random plastic items: I have been guilty of this, thinking if its plastic, its recyclable but you really have to make sure to look for the triangle logo and then be sure that the number corresponds to one that your recycling center accepts.

6. Glass not from containers: If you are recycling vases or glasses during your spring cleaning, think again. These containers are meant to be used over and over so they have glass with a higher melting point. Give them away instead of tossing them in the bins.

7. Shredded paper: Now this seems like something that should be recyclable, after all it is paper. But these little shreds most often fall through the cracks and can clog machines costing valuable time and money to repair. Shred only what you need to and recycle the rest.

As many of you remember, last year in celebration of my new brand, I held a contest for the most green wedding. After several entries and thousands of votes, Colleen and Tom were chosen by popular vote. A huge thanks to Carmen Salazar who came out to help in my still-recovering state and of course Aaron for pushing himself to help cover what I could not.

Molly Grace Shoots Ashley & Mike's Super Fun Day!

We all were so excited to wake up and see the beautiful sunshine as the night before it poured. The thing I loved about this wedding was Ashley's excitement and humor, as she came up with funny things to say so that she didn't cry. The day had an emphasis on family, fitting since the next day was Father's Day, but anyone could clearly see by the photo's from the slideshow and the friends and families with little ones running around just how important shared times is to these too. This couple is amazing together and I am so excited for them!

Molly Grace Shoots Emma & Jamie's E- Session

It was so fun to hang out with Emma & Jamie this past monday. You can tell this couple has a ton of fun together, over drinks and dinner they told me about their recent engagement parties and the fun weekend they had at the old town arts festival this past weekend. I loved heading down to the beach with them, and then to the famous Old Town Pub, where they met. I am so looking forward to shooting Emma & Jamie's Wedding this July because I know it will be a huge celebration with all their precious friends and family, especially those that are coming in from Ireland.

Jewel and Adam's Wedding

I will never forget Jewel and Adam's wedding day, I went into labor that night! The sad part was that I was not able to shoot the whole wedding but luckily I had a great team behind me including my great friend Chad Husar of Husar Photography and Aaron and Molly.

Jewel and Adam are incredibly thoughtful and kind people. They incorporated environmentally friendly and community supportive vendors into the planning of their wedding. I was fortunate enough that the baby waited until after the wedding to come so I could stop by and visit and shoot for a couple hours and Aaron didn't have to leave too! :)

For planning, they used So Stacy who can help you plan a green wedding.

For invitations, they used Kristie Lee Wagner of Anjenu who offers green stationary and she is an excellent designer as well which you can see below!

Other vendors include the Cake Girls, Food for Thought, Old St. Pats, and the Adler Planetarium.

I love this shot Aaron got of the dress, such a great way to incorporate the room and show a detail in a different way. I love this shot Chad got of Jewel getting ready, such beautiful light and a great moment! This is another great shot by Chad, such a sweet look by Adam when he sees Jewel for the first time I was excited to be able to come to the wedding and see Jewel and Adam and have a couple moments to get a few pics of my own I love this shot that Aaron got of Jewel and Adam, great framing using very Adler architecture I love this detail by Molly, a very Molly shot :) This is a great shot by Molly with a nice moment combined with great lines. Here are some of the details Aaron literally climbed the outside of the building to get this unique view! Nice having a climber on staff!

Impact Tip - reusable wrapping

Now that baby Ayla has finally arrived, I can think straight and back to my Impact Tips so thank you for your patience!

I found this on the Down the Green Aisle blog and thought it was a great idea! I personally love the look a beautiful package but have a hard time getting around the waste of it. This solves that problem, a beautiful presentation with a reusable package material. Perfect for any occasion but certainly for that wedding you are going to this year.

Ayla Brianne aka Baby Danger

We are finally home and so excited to be here with our precious little girl Ayla Brianne. I went into labor Sat night after Jewel's wedding (which we will post soon!) which goes to show that little Ayla is already so kind as to wait until after a wedding to start her way out into the world! haha

Ayla means strong as an oak and we hope that she will always be strong enough to be herself. Brianne is after my sister for her nonstop love and faith in me, our hope that Ayla have that same devotion and sweetness towards her family and others. Although we didn't name her Danger, she is still our little baby danger and we will continue to push her to find life's adventures!

As some of you know, we planned a home birth and I did make it 22 hours and 8 cm at home but with some complications and pure exhaustion, I need to take advantage of our medical system and head to the hospital to get through the rest of the labor, all in all 25 hrs. I couldn't be happier with our Doctor, Dr. Munoz, and the staff at Rush University Hospital. They took all my worst fears of a hospital birth and squished them flat. They were so kind and attentive and never even mentioned interventions that weren't necessary. My midwife says this is a successful home birth story, we did as much as we could then took advantage of the technology we have. I don't think I would have been able to push her out on my own if I didn't have that option. In the end, we are all doing great and it was a life changing experience.

She was 8 lbs 13 oz and 41 weeks and 5 days past her due date! She took her time coming but we are so glad she is here now. I can't describe how much I love her, but I am trying to keep this quick (too late!) so I can get back to her.

Molly Grace Shoot's Jessica and Brian's E- Session

I was super excited to shoot Jessica and Brian's Engagement session. Jessica heard of me through one of my seniors Samantha, and though she already had a photographer set for her wedding she fell in love with my work and wanted me to do their engagement session. I loved hanging out with the two of them on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and capturing and exploring their love.

Molly Grace Shoot's Michael & Julianna's Wedding

I was so excited to shoot Michael and Julianna's wedding and have been ever since I shot their engagement session last summer and they climbed a tree together. Julianna looked amazing, when I got there, and so I knew they day was just gonna rock! Michael and Julianna exchanged rings and vows at Saint Clement Church in Chicago, pictures downtown and then the reception was at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. The day was packed with many moments and super gorgeous picture opportunities, props to Michael for organizing our route! The night was filled with good toasts and the party got started with music by John Miles of DJ Remedy.

What is it about our clients that we love, well to sum it up, our clients are amazing, and are truly an inspiration to us! I loved getting to know Julianna and Michael hearing their story of how they met at NASA, and how Michael right away knew that Julianna was the woman he had been looking for. During their ceremony I loved hearing how it's their faith in God and their faith in each other that moves them. Such words, such love, really inspired the whole day.

I love this shot, you can't plan moments like this, you just have to be ready.

Julianna looked amazing and peaceful on the way to the church.

Just hanging... lookin' fine on a Saturday with a Mercedes-Benz limo, you know, how we normally do :)

Michael loved the toasts!

Impact Tip - oops

I can't believe I totally forgot about my Impact Tip yesterday! That is a first, and I have to say, it must be baby brain. I thought I was going into labor yesterday but nothing happened. Anyway, I hope to have more news and interesting ideas to share about making an impact in your life in the coming weeks. For now, I am focusing on getting through this birth so bear with me.

For those of you who don't know yet, I am having an all natural birth at home so I can't get to the pain meds even if I want them! So wish me luck, it will all be over soon and I will be sure to post some pictures just as soon as I can! I am just as excited as everyone else to find out....girl or boy! I don't know!!!! I can't wait!

Molly Grace Shoot's Gwynne & Matt's Wedding

So I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to shoot Gwynne and Matt's wedding. I had not even meet Gwynne & Matt until the day of their wedding but of course fell in love with them right away over the phone when they hired me. Then one cold day in January Gwynne emailed me just to say how excited she was to have meet shoot her wedding, that is the best feeling as a photographer, so I really was excited to shoot it. I loved each moment of the day, but mostly what got me was the love of these two. I admired it all day long as they just glowed and sparkled around each other. I loved the moment behind the door, just after they walked back down the aisle, I loved seeing Matt carry his bride, and loved seeing everyone have such a fun time on the dance floor. Matt even did a little Vanilla Ice for us too!

Matt and Gwynne's reception was at the Wyndham Glenview Suites. Thanks to Jeff from Music By Design for being such an awesome D.J.

Our new studio!

As some of you know, we recently moved to a bigger studio and it was tough finding the perfect place but after much searching, we found it! We can't wait to meet all our clients in our new space.

Our last space, while very rustic and contemporary, just was too energy inefficient and that was our primary concern in finding the new place. This place has very high effeciency windows that run throughout the unit allowing good airflow during the spring-fall but keeping heat in during the winter. It faces Northeast so the sun does warm it in the morning but doesn't bake the unit requiring extra energy to keep cool.

All the furniture is either donated, made, or antique (reused!) and I am slowly building my collection of plants that are both functional (herbs) or just nice to look at and keep the air clean :)

We wanted to paint it so we chose Fresh Aire paints which are the only eco-friendly, family friendly paint out there. Overall the colors were good and there was no smell but it was not the best coverage paint I have ever used, but I am no professional either :)

It was seriously such a beautiful day on Tuesday, it was the calm before the storm on Wednesday which had been the day we had originally planned to meet up. Ahh... such fun we had! I loved meeting Gerald who had flown in from CA where he and Julie will soon live together in Wedded Bliss! Gerald was the man, and I loved that he loved the excuse to get close in on his girl, it made for some great pic's!
